Harrisburg, November 17, 2017 — Senator John Yudichak (D-Luzerne/Carbon) announced today that two school districts in Carbon County have received Safe Schools Grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).
Weatherly Area School District has been awarded a Safe Schools Equipment Grant in the amount of $20,000. The goals of these grants are to assist school districts in reducing unnecessary student disciplinary actions and to assist school districts in obtaining resources and training necessary to create a physical environment that fosters the safety and well-being of students and staff.
Lehighton Area School District has been awarded a Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grant in the amount of $59,994. The grants are for two years and are intended to be used for the training and compensation of school resource officers and school police officers.
Also, the Carbon-Lehigh Intermediate Unit has been awarded the Year 2 allocation of their 2016-17 Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grant in the amount of $20,000.
“Our students and staff deserve to come to school every day and have a positive and safe learning environment. These grants will equip our school districts and intermediate unit with the essential resources they need to help keep students and staff safe,” said Senator John Yudichak.
